Windows 7 Upgrade from Windows XP

If you’re eager to try the new Microsoft operating system, Windows 7, but do not know how to update it from your Windows XP, here are the steps you must take to achieve it.

We recommend you have a copy of this tutorial as the computer restarts, or you can always return to this page.

Step 1: Find out if your computer is ready for Windows 7

Make sure your equipment is ready for Windows 7, for this you should download the Windows Upgrade Advisor 7 free. It will help you find potential hardware problems, computer systems or programs that may affect the installation of Windows 7 and provides recommendations on what to do.

Download the Upgrade Advisor Windows 7

1. Login to the web Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 at Microsoft.
2. Click the Download button and then save the installation file on your computer.
3. Double-click the installation file.
4. Double-click the installation file.
5. If you are prompted to install. NET 2.0, if you want to accept.
6. If you agree with the license terms, click Install.
7. Click Close.

Open and run the Upgrade Advisor Windows 7

If the Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 is still not running, double-click the shortcut on the Windows Upgrade Advisor on your desktop 7.

1. In the dialog security warning, click Yes.
2. Click Start testing.
3. Read the report carefully and take note of the problems the Upgrade Advisor and find the recommended steps to fix those problems.
4. To save the report and print it later, click Save report, type a name in the File Name box, and then click Save.
5. Click Close.

Step 2: move files and settings and compile the program disks

Download and install Windows Easy Transfer

1. Download Windows Easy Transfer on the Windows website.

If you run a 32-bit version of Windows XP, Windows XP: click on Download 32-bit version. If you run a 64-bit version of Windows XP, click Download 64-bit version.

2. Click Download and then click Open.

Run Windows Easy Transfer to save your files and settings

1. Make sure the external hard drive or other external storage device connected to your computer.

2. Click Start, All Programs, and then click Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 7.

3. Click Next.

4. Select A USB flash drive or external hard drive.

5. Click This is my old computer, and then wait while Windows Easy Transfer will scan the computer.

6. Uncheck the boxes next to the user accounts from those who do not want to transfer data, and then click Next.

7. Enter and re-enter a password, then type it and save it in a safe place or leave the boxes blank and click Save.

8. Explore the external hard drive or other external storage device to save your file Easy Transfer and then click Save.

Step 3: Installing Windows 7

If you choose the Custom option during installation, you can install a new copy of Windows on your computer.
Before you begin:

Connect the computer to the Internet to get updates during the installation setup process. (Although you do not have an Internet connection, you can install Windows 7).

1. Select the Windows installation disc 7 of 32 bits or 64 bits, depending on whether you want to install the 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7.

Step 4: move files and settings to the computer

7. To accept the default account assignment, click Transfer.

8. To change how Windows XP accounts are assigned in Windows 7, click Advanced.

9. On the Transfer complete, click View transferred to see a list of all user accounts moved from Windows XP to Windows 7.

10. Click View a list of programs that could install the new computer to see what was previously installed on Windows XP.

11. Click Close. If prompted to restart your computer, click Restart Now.

Step 5: Re-install the software and update drivers

Windows Easy Transfer provides you with a report detailing the programs used in Windows XP that you want to reinstall.

To reinstall programs, you will need to use the installation disks or the configuration files, compiled earlier.

If your computer came pre-installed with various programs, you may never see programs that you used or you used rarely in the list of the report.
