If you are working on Microsoft Outlook with IMAP or POP3 accounts, all your sent and received emails are stored in PST (Personal Folders) file. Microsoft Outlook enables you to set a password to Microsoft Outlook PST file, to safeguard your emails, notes, contacts, and other Outlook items, from unauthorized access. However, in some situations, you may forget or lose your Outlook PST file password. In such situations, you cannot access data from the PST file. At this point, you need to use PST Password Recovery utilities.

Several Microsoft Outlook users are not aware of the fact that PST Password protection is not very strong. If you lost your PST file password, you can recover it very easily.

How does Outlook save your password in PST file?

Actually the Outlook password in not saved in PST file. In place of storing the actual password, Microsoft Outlook creates a hash value of 32-bit, which represents original password. This number is generated using CRC32 algorithm with minor modifications.

The CRC32 algorithm is generally used for verifying the data integrity. However, Microsoft use it for password protection in place of using some strong hashing techniques. The only bad thing with such password protection is the reality that for every 32-bit string, there are a number of matching passwords.

What is null password bug in Microsoft Outlook?

Microsoft Outlook uses 32-bit value to determine whether to prompt user to enter a password. If the value is not zero, you must enter a password, which matches same CRC value for opening the PST file. If value is zero, you are allowed to open your PST file without entering a password.

However, the problem occurs when you set a PST Password that matches zero CRC value. This is a very critical bug. In such cases, you need not to enter any password for accessing data from PST file.

In case you Lost PST Password of Microsoft Outlook PST file, PST Password Recovery Tool becomes a need of hour. You can easily Recover PST Password using these advanced and powerful third-party applications.

Absolute and Easy Way to Avoid System Failure

July 9, 2010 · Posted in Programming, Software · Comment

Mac OS X operating system uses a special data structure to store, manage, and manipulate your valuable data. It is known as file system. Macintosh operating system supports the HFS (Hierarchical File System) series of file systems. HFS file system has various variants, such as HFS+, HFSX, and HFS Wrapper. Among all, HFS+ is the most powerful file system, which supports advanced features like journaling and enhanced performance. The journaling feature prevents system failure and file system corruption to avoid need of Mac recovery, in case of improper system shutdown.

File system is the most critical component of Mac OS X operating system. It has to be intact and in working state to keep your system up. If file system is damaged, system may not work properly. However, in some cases, the file system may become dirty. It does not let you boot your system properly and access stored data from the hard drive. At this point, you may come across an error message, similar to the following one:

“File system dirty, run fsck”

After the above error message, you cannot access your precious data stored on Mac OS X hard drive and come across severe data loss situations. In order to get your data recovered in such cases, data recovery Mac has to be performed.

Root of the problem:

You may encounter this behavior of Mac OS X operating system due to corrupt or damaged file system. The corruption may occur due to a plenty of reasons, such as virus infection, hard reboot, improper system shutdown, running fsck on a mounted Mac OS X hard drive volume, and interrupted power supply.

Resolution:

You can try fixing this issue using any of the below methods:

  • Boot your Mac OS X computer in Safe Mode.
  • If your system does not boot in Safe Mode, check and fix file system errors using Disk Utility.
  • If both the above methods fail to work, try running fsck manually.
  • If none of the above methods work, you need to use third-party Mac disk recovery software to recover lost data.

Mac drive recovery programs are incorporated with advanced scanning algorithms and interactive graphical user interface to offer absolute and easy recovery. They are capable of retrieving lost data from all types of storage media, including hard drive, USB drive, memory card, and Apple iPod.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery is the most advanced and effective solution to successfully recover lost data in all scenarios. The software recovers Mac data from all HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper, and FAT file system volumes. It is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.5 Leopard, 10.4 Tiger, and 10.3.9 Panther.

When Files are Deleted from your Directory……..

July 8, 2010 · Posted in Software · Comment

It is a common scenario for documents to be deleted, lost or damaged on a computer. To recover data on hard drive partitions involves using 3 approaches – manually, via software or by experts. Here, we’ll detail the options and when they should be used.

Manual Approach

The simplest situation is when files are deleted from your directory. The files should still be visible in the Recycle Bin so you can select them, hit the restore option and they will be moved back to their last directory location.

Data Recovery Software

There are many free and commercial data recovery software options that may be used in the following situations:
- Deleted file bypassed the Recycle Bin.
- The Bin and all its contents were emptied.
- The hard drive was formatted.

Documents are stored to the hard drive as data clusters and indexed in the File Allocation Table (FAT – associates your single document with multiple data clusters on the drive). A deleted/formatted file will have its directory location attribute reset/cleared in the FAT but the data clusters will still exist.

To recover data on hard drive sectors that are invisible in your file/directory structure requires using data recovery software that reads the FAT and analyzes the data clusters to identify discernible documents. These documents can then be displayed back to you and copied to another location. The success rate of using this software depends greatly upon how much PC use occurred after deletion (as ongoing usage eventually begins overwriting the data clusters).

Data Recovery Specialists

Finally, data recovery specialists will have high-end software that can recover greater quantities of data from even formatted drives. In addition, they can complete the costly task of recovering hard drive data from damaged computers; this requires extracting the damaged disk and using specialist reading devices to extract data clusters. The success rate depends upon how badly damaged the disk partitions and sectors were. Costs will fluctuate depending on the amount of PC repairs and mechanical reconstruction that is required.
